Baptism

E-mail Print PDF

The ordinary way that God has instituted for us to receive his divine life and come into his family is the sacrament of Baptism.

Jesus said to his disciples before ascending into heaven, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you...” (Matt. 28: 19-20)

"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.'" (CCC 1213)

In Baptism, the stain of original sin is washed away, though concupiscence, or the tendency to sin, remains.  Jesus tells us that we must be reborn of water and the Spirit (John 3:5).  It is in Baptism that we are reborn as children of God.  We are brought in to the family of God and become members of the Body of Christ, the Church.  In Baptism we are given new life and sanctifying grace.  Baptism gives us an indelible spiritual mark, or character, that configures us to Jesus. Baptism can only be received once.
